New COVID Stress in U.K. May Be Better at Infecting Children, Researchers Say

A brand-new stress of COVID might spread more easily in children than previous kinds of the virus, leading U.K. scientists believe.

Early evidence suggests the stress, called VUI-202012/01, might be better at spreading out than previous variations, however it is not believed to make people sicker or more most likely to pass away. The pressure is not thought to affect the effectiveness of COVID vaccines and p harmaceutical companies Moderna and Pfizer have said they are running tests in the hopes of proving this.

So far in the pandemic, COVID has not affected children and teens as badly as adults.

Teacher Neil Ferguson, Nervtag member and director of the MRC Centre for Worldwide Infectious Illness Analysis at Imperial College London, said there was a “tip” in the available data that the anomaly may be better at infecting children.

Peter Horby, chair of Nervtag and teacher of emerging transmittable diseases at the Centre for Tropical Medication and Global Health, University of Oxford, said: “This is one of the bits of information where you need to be careful.
