Four Atlanta business people– Lewis Medlock, Ed Gentry, Bobby Trippe and Drew Ballinger– choose to canoe down a river in the remote northern Georgia wilderness prior to it is dammed. Lewis, a skilled outdoorsman, is the leader; his close good friend Ed has actually been on numerous journeys but does not have Lewis’ machismo, while Bobby and Drew are novices. At a regional gas station Drew, with his guitar, engages a young banjo-playing boy in a musical duel (” Dueling Banjos”).
