Dr. Katherine O. Estep has received the Outstanding Student Achievement Award for the School of Nursing.
“I grew up in Middleton, Idaho and always had a passion for the outdoors. Growing up, I enjoyed spending time with my family camping and being in the mountains. I graduated high school from Middleton High School in 2009, and immediately started taking prerequisites for nursing school at a local community college. I graduated with my Associates Degree of Liberal Arts and obtained my Certified Nursing Assistant License (CNA) in 2011, and started applying for nursing schools. I was accepted into Idaho State University’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing program, and began classes in the Spring of 2012.
While in nursing school, I worked at a skilled nursing facility and assisted living for Alzheimer’s and dementia residents as a CNA. I graduated with my Bachelors of Science in Nursing from Idaho State University in 2014. Since then, I have been working as an emergency department and acute care nurse at a rural critical access hospital.
In 2016, my husband and I got married. My husband and I enjoy being outdoors camping, fishing, biking, and snowmobiling. I was accepted into Idaho State University’s Doctor of Nursing Practice program in 2018, and began classes that fall. While in the program, I continued to work as a registered nurse. For my DNP project, I implemented a Stop the Bleed program for the rural farmers in my community. This intervention provided education and resources regarding managing bleeding injuries to rural farmers who are at high risk for bleeding injury.
I am looking forward to transitioning roles in healthcare but continuing to care for patients. I am currently hoping to work in a family practice clinic as a nurse practitioner.”
