An online fundraising campaign created to support jailed Michigan dining establishment owner Marlena Pavlos-Hackney exceeded its initial $200,00 0 goal on Sunday afternoon. The owner of Marlena’s Bistro and Pizzeria was detained last week after consistently declining to follow the state’s functional mandates for food service facilities during the COVID pandemic.
The fundraising effort’s host increased the goal to $250,00 0 on Sunday. Pavlos-Hackney’s legal proceedings have gathered nationwide attention from conservatives, a lot of whom have pushed back against Michigan’s COVID-19 mitigation measures for the better part of a year. Pavlos-Hackney appeared prior to Ingham County Circuit Judge Rosemarie Aquilina during a court hearing on Friday, and will remain in custody at Ingham County prison while state personnel keep an eye on the restaurant to verify it is really closed.
