MSNBC anchor Christopher Hayes has compared Democratic New York Governor Andrew Cuomo‘s underreporting of COVID-19 deaths in New york city state retirement home to previous President Donald Trump‘s March 2020 declaration about not desiring COVID-19 case numbers to increase.
At the time, Trump stated that he wished to keep passengers possibly contaminated with COVID-19 on a cruise ship.
” I don’t need to have the numbers double since of one ship that wasn’t our fault,” Trump said.
The Quote
Speaking on the Friday edition of the MSNBC news commentary program All In, Hayes pointed out a Thursday report by The New York City Times
The Times article declared that in June 2020, Cuomo’s aides were “alarmed” at a New york city state health report revealing over 9,000 COVID-19- associated deaths in state retirement home. The aides presumably stepped in to rewrite the report to get rid of the death toll.
In action, Hayes stated:
” To specify the obvious this is truly, truly bad. There does not seem a great description for this. It’s the lying and the control that is indefensible. That’s the thing about the Trump administration and their COVID management that was indefensible. When Trump stated: ‘I want to keep individuals on the cruise liner because I didn’t want those numbers,’ that’s not a defensible position, right? You can make mistakes in managing COVID, and people did. That’s not a defensible position, to synthetically reduce the numbers. That very same principle applies here.”

Cuomo touted his own administration’s openness throughout the pandemic in his October 2020 bestselling book, American Crisis: Leadership Lessons from the COVID-19 Pandemic
In a declaration to Newsweek, Beth Garvey, Cuomo’s senior consultant and unique counsel, composed that the Cuomo administration’s July 2020 reporting of COVID-19- associated deaths in state nursing homes only consisted of deaths that had actually been validated by long-lasting care facilities.
Garvey added that none of Cuomo’s COVID taskforce members– consisting of Melissa DeRosa, Linda Lacewell, and Jim Malatras– altered any of the fatality numbers or modified the death information.
The Counterpoint
On March 6, 2020, Trump openly discussed a Grand Princess cruise ship on which 35 individuals reported flu-like signs. Anxious that they and other guests might be contaminated with COVID-19, the city of San Francisco wrestled with whether to let the ship’s travelers disembark.
At the time, Trump said he would rather have the people stay on board.
“[San Francisco] wishes to have the people come off. I ‘d rather have individuals remain, but I opt for them. I informed them to make the decision,” Trump said. “I would rather because I like the numbers being where they are. I do not require to have the numbers double because of one ship that wasn’t our fault.”
Trump added that he didn’t think about the health problem to be the fault of the people on board either.
” I can live in either case with it.” he concluded. “I ‘d rather have them stay on, personally, however I completely understand if they wish to take them off.”
Various polls leading up to Election Day and analyses because have actually concluded that Trump’s mishandling of the pandemic expense him a 2nd term. Many citizens mentioned the pandemic as their primary issue. Additionally, before the election, 2 of the country’s earliest medical journals criticized his action and stated he should be voted out for it
A current survey showed that 55 percent of Cuomo’s constituents don’t believe he must resign as he deals with the retirement home scandal and unwanted sexual advances accusations If the scandals get worse, Cuomo could find himself losing reelection like Trump as soon as he is back on the tally in 2022.
Update 3/6/2021, 3: 18 p.m. ET, to include a declaration from Cuomo’s unique counsel.
