Decolonizing Nursing: What? Why? How?

The Center for Nursing Viewpoint was honored to partner with Nursology.net to co-sponsor a virtual webinar panel discussion entitled Decolonizing Nursing: What? Why? How?

The occasion, held Thursday Sept. 23, 2021, started as an effort in the Theory-Guided Practice Professional Panel of the American Academy of Nursing (AAN).

The chair of that AAN panel, Dr. Marlaine Smith, and Dr. Peggy Chinn, editor of the journal Advances in Nursing Science and a creator of Nursology.net, collaborated with panel speakers to arrange this essential occasion.

The recognized panel of speakers consisted of:

Dr. Lisa Bourque Bearskin, associate teacher and Inaugural BC Research Study Chair in Indigenous Health in Nursing at Thompson Rivers University in British Columbia, Canada, who presented the principles of decolonization and fact and reconciliation

Dr. Lucinda Canty, assistant teacher of Nursing at the University of Saint Joseph, a Licensed Nurse-Midwife, and host of Overdue Numeration on Bigotry in Nursing, who discussed her scholarship on perinatal morbidity and death of Black ladies and its ramifications

Dr. Jennifer Woo, assistant teacher at Texas Female’s University, who discussed the value of highlighting BIPOC nursing heroes in nursing/midwifery education as a way of decolonizing nursing

Dr. Barbara Hatcher, Principal at Hatcher-DuBois-Odrick Group, who discussed vaccine hesitancy and the experiences that generate it and other concerns effecting Black and Brown individuals

Dr. Lucy Mkandawire-Valhmu, teacher at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, who discussed the value of decolonizing nursing academic community as a method of boosting the success of BIPOC trainees

Dr. Daniel Saurez-Baquero, a latino nurse from Colombia and a post-doctoral fellow at the University of California San Francisco, who discussed his scholarship associated to marking down the methods of individuals around the globe and the principles and viewpoints embedded in Spanish and Latin America

Dr. Bukolla Salami, associate teacher at the University of Alberta in Canada, who discussed her deal with Black youth from a decolonization and vital lens

Peggy Chinn and Marlaine Smith presented the panel occasion, which was moderated by Miriam Bender. There were 776 registrants from around the world, who used the chat box thoroughly throughout the occasion to share their ideas and products such as links to posts and post connected to the speaker’s subjects. The constant view originating from individuals was how “effective” and “significant” each panelist’s talk was, sharing important understanding and supplying concrete actions to decolonize nursing.

As one individual put it, “This panel has actually been totally DAZZLING! Profound. Deep Fact Telling. Radical: Taking us to the roots. Value the terrific clearness of each panelist. Soul & Heart exposed to everyone! Thank you, each & everybody.”
