A Certified Medication Aide (CMA) administers medication to elderly and ill residents of Assistant living. CMAs also regularly assess residents’ heart and pulse rates and produce written reports outlining the outcomes of various treatment regimens. A CMA usually begins work as a certified nurse assistant (CNA), Certified Home Health Aide (CHHA) or Personal Care Assistant (PCA) who fulfills similar roles to CMAs but are not permitted to administer medication. The average salary of a CMA as of July 2010 was from $20,825 to $27,727, according to Pay Scale in the career and education website.
E&S Academy is now offering the Certified Medication Aide program, that prepares the students with the clinical skills and theory they will need to be able to administer medications in the assisted living setting.
This training course will give PCAs, NA, & HHAs the knowledge they require to assist residents with self-administration. However a heavy emphasis is placed on procedures for direct administration of medications for those residents who are not able to self-administer, due to the great complexity of responsibility that is involved in performing this task under the registered professional nurse’s delegation
Purpose of This Course
• To provide the student with the knowledge they require in administering medications in assisted living facilities and comprehensive Personal Care Homes, or within an Assisted Living Program.
• Competencies and Pre-Requisites Prior to acceptance into this program, the candidate must have six (6) months experience as a NJ Certified Nursing Assistant or Home Health Aide.
• This forty five (45) hour program is designed to prepare select qualified candidates for the responsibility of administering medication, under the circumstances when a registered nurse delegates this task.
• Course is conducted in Department of Health and Senior Services approved facilities.
