The Development of the Japanese Nursing Occupation, Embracing and Adapting Western Influences

In the years after 1868, when Japan’s long period of self-imposed seclusion ended, in nursing, as in every other aspect of life, the Japanese sought to the west. This book tells the story of ‘Florence Nightingale-ism’ in Japan, demonstrating how Japanese nursing established from 1868 to today. It discusses how Japanese nursing adopted western designs, executing ‘Nightingale-ism’ in a mindful, caricature way, and executed it more totally, a minimum of on the surface, than in Britain. At the same time Japanese nurses had to cope, with terrific trouble, with standard Japanese mindsets, which were highly opposed to women being involved in professions of any kind, and, as the book reveals, western designs did not in fact permeate really deeply.
