Discomfort Management and the Opioid Epidemic, Balancing Social and Private Benefits and Risks of Prescription Opioid Usage

Drug overdose, driven largely by overdose associated to the use of opioids, is now the leading cause of unintentional injury death in the United States. The continuous opioid crisis lies at the intersection of 2 public health obstacles: minimizing the problem of struggling with discomfort and including the increasing toll of the damages that can occur from the use of opioid medications. Chronic pain and opioid usage condition both represent complex human conditions impacting countless Americans and causing untold impairment and loss of function. In the context of the growing opioid problem, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) introduced an Opioids Action Strategy in early2016 As part of this plan, the FDA asked the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine to assemble a committee to update the state of the science on discomfort research study, care, and education and to recognize actions the FDA and others can require to react to the opioid epidemic, with a particular concentrate on notifying FDA’s development of an official method for including individual and social considerations into its risk-benefit structure for opioid approval and tracking.
