A: Aunt Jamie?
B: Yes, Minnie?
A: I wanted to find out how to become a certified nursing assistant. Aren’t you a nursing aide in the local hospital?
B: I am. For more than ten years already, in fact.
A: Wow! That’s a long time. You must love your job.
B: It’s great. Interacting with patients helping them on a very personal level allows me to meet so many new people.
A: How did you first start applying to become a nursing aide?
B: The first step is to get state-approved training. Here in California, because of the large demand for nursing care, there are a lot of programs approved by the state Department of Health.
A: After the program is finished can you start work immediately?
B: I still had to take a competency exam, which is given by the Department of Health as well. Once I’m certified, I can start applying to jobs and working as a nurse aide.
A: Are certificates the same as licenses?
B: They aren’t. Each state has a different certification exam offered by a governing body, usually that state’s department of health.
A: I understand.
B: You can read more about this on chooseCNA.org. It’s a good website that helped me a lot when I was first applying to be a nursing aide.
A: Thank you, Aunt Jamie!
